Gary Bucher, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Gary Bucher is the Medical Director and founder of  Anal Dysplasia Clinic MidWest, a medical practice dedicated to the anal health of men and women with HPV-related symptoms and concerns such as abnormal anal pap smears, anal warts, and anal dysplasia.

Dr. Bucher graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine in 1989.  Dr. Bucher is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and holds fellowship degrees from the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Nutrition. He has taken interest in the HIV/AIDS field since the early days of the epidemic, where he published and presented papers nationally and internationally. He worked at Howard Brown Health Center and helped start its HIV primary care clinic.  Highly active antiretroviral medications have made HIV/AIDS into a chronic manageable illness.  Recently, the rates of anal cancer have been increasing in gay, bisexual, and individuals who have anal receptive sex. Organizations that recommend routine anal screening with anal pap smear and digital rectal exam include the American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Dr. Bucher founded Anal Dysplasia Clinic MidWest to treat patients with abnormal anal pap smears, persistent anal symptoms and anal condyloma. He has completed specialized training in office-based evaluation of abnormal anal pap smears or rectal exams with High Resolution Anoscopy (HRA). He also received specialized training in office-based treatment of high grade, non-invasive anal lesions with Infrared Photocoagulation/Infrared Cautery (IRC). Dr. Bucher is the only certified HRA provider in the midwest.

 He is on the medical staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Lincoln Park and Cook County Health and Hospital Systems in Chicago.
